New York City

Dylan and I are going to New York City for Easter weekend, and we are very excited. Dylan's mom has been living there during the week for her job, and since she won't have the apartment after June, we decided that this would be a great time to go to the city to check out her place, and spend some time with them.

We have some things planned already, but I'll post more about our trip while we're there.

Happy Birthday, Dylan!

Happy Birthday, Dylan!

Today is his 22nd birthday. It's crazy to me that he's already 22, because we started dating when he was 18! We aren't doing anything special tonight, because he has an exam tomorrow in one of his science classes. So I told him that he can be spoiled and celebrate all weekend instead.

I got him a card that had a beer mug on the cover and said: "Since your friends just aren't that entertaining" and on the inside said: "Bottoms Up! Happy Birthday!" I personalized it a bit though, and made the cover read: "Since your friends are that entertaining, but you're girlfriend isn't" and then on the inside I told him he may get me to have a drink with him. We'll see.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

So, my family recently found out that there is a small percentage of Irish Heritage in our blood! All this time we thought that we weren't Irish, and after researching my family history, I found out that my Great-Great-Great-Grandfather married a woman with the last name Carroll.

So tonight, we went over to my aunt and uncles house for a traditional Irish meal: Corned Beef, Cabbage, Potatoes, Carrots, and Irish Soda Bread. It was a very good meal. My cousin, her husband, and their two kids were there, and it was great to see them. I hadn't seen them since Thanksgiving because we weren't in RI for Christmas this year. They left pretty early because their children, Ben and Ryan, are so young, and needed to go to bed. We stayed for a bit longer and watched part of American Idol with my aunt, uncle, and younger cousin, and then left because Dylan had some homework to do.

It was great to be able to visit with them. I'm looking forward to the boys' birthday parties in a few weeks.

Last Day in Georgia

Today was our last day in Georgia. We fly out tomorrow morning. We just got back from the airport because we had to pick up my dad. He ended up having to go up to RI for business, which sucks because the snow last week rescheduled his meetings for this week. Oh well, nothing he can do about it.

So today we decided to rent some kayaks from the clubhouse in my parent's community. We took them out in the marshes in the morning, while the tide was high, and just got to row around the water. It was very peaceful, and the water was very calm.

Around lunchtime, we drve down to Fernandina Beach to go horseback riding on the beach. We brought lunches with us and ate them there before getting on the horses. When we were getting ready to go ride, the ranchers decided to put Mom on the largest horse they had, and Dylan on the smallest. It was so funny to see. We rode along the beach, and it was so cold! It was probably only 65 degrees on the land, but near the water with the breeze and the fog rolling in, it was much colder. The mist and fog was so bad that most of the time we couldn't see through our glasses. Good thing the horses don't have to wear them.

When we got back to St. Marys, we met Emily at Sonic, and had Sonic Blasts. Sonic is SO good! I can't believe that the closest one to RI is in Pennsylvania. Such a tease.

Anyway, we took the kayaks back out after we got back to the community, and ended up going all the way from the community clubhouse to Florida. The way there was great because we were going with the current, but the way back was the exact opposite of that. We were trying to paddle against the current, so it was much more work than earlier, but still well worth it.

The problem this time was that the tide was so low that the boat ramp was covered in mud, and we were slipping everywhere when we were trying to bring the kayaks back up the ramp. So we had to go home and shower quickly and then go pick up Grammie to see her one last time before we left. We ate dinner with her at Mom and Dad's house, and then left to go pick up my dad from the airport.

Tomorrow is going to be a really long day. We have a flight at 7:30 in the morning, and then a 3 hour layover in Philadelphia. I'm looking forward to getting back home, and picking up Everrett from my uncle's clinic.

St. Simon's and Jekyll Island

Today my grandmother had an eye doctor's appointment in Brunswick, GA, so Dylan and I went up with her and my mom to see the islands and attractions up there. There are two really great islands that are very touristy, and you get to them by crossing one hundred bridges. It's not literally one hundred, but it sure is close.

The islands were beautiful. The first one we went to was St. Simon's. It's a small island in Georgia that has a golf course on it, a small airport, and a strip of cafes and restaurants that you can eat at by the water. We walked over to the visitors center to get some pamphlets about the island, and then down to the water and the dock where you could see dolphins swimming. It was so cool to see.

We ate lunch outside at a small cafe, and then had to head back onto the mainland for my grandmother's appointment. Dylan and I took the car while they were there, and decided to go over to Jekyll Island. It's a bigger island than St. Simon's, but has the same general stuff. We walked down to the beach just to admire the water, and took a few pictures of how beautiful it was.

We headed back over to St. Simon's after driving around for a bit, and just enjoyed the different scenery. The day was pretty much over when we picked up my mom and grandmother, so we just headed home.

Cumberland Island

Cumberland Island is nature preserve on an 18-mile long island off the coast of Georgia. There is a ferry that leaves from downtown St. Marys two times a day to bring tourists over to the island. Since my parents haven't done much exploring since they moved, we decided to take a day and go over. There are no places to buy food or water on the island, so we packed some lunches and left very early to go over. The ride was beautiful, and so calm in the water. Most of the ferry ride was through marshes, and the water was very smooth. Along the way, we found two dolphins riding along with the front of the boat. It was such an awesome thing to see.

Once we got to the island, we found a trail map and started along some of the paths. The trails are all lined with large trees that are covered in Spanish moss, and palm trees and palmettos. The trees are very different from trees in the north too. The branches are all twisty and the trees are much shorter than you would expect.

The island used to be the home of a wealthy southerner, but his mansion was ruined in multiple fires and hurricanes. The ruins of the mansion are being preserved on the island, and are known to others as "Dungeness." It looks like it would have been a beautiful home, and is on a large plantation in the middle of the island.

While we were walking over we saw two of the over 150 wild horses on the island, and they were beautiful.

We followed the hiking trails all day, and finally made our way over to the beach for lunch. The beach was huge, and there were probably only 10 people on it total, so it was like we had the entire thing to ourselves. We spent a good two hours on the beach, just enjoying the 80 degrees and the relaxation after spending four hours walking along the island.

After lunch, we walked to the northern tip of the island, to find more hiking trails around a campground and more of the awesome twisty trees. The bugs were outrageous on the island, but they weren't mosquitos. They were little black gnats that would land on you and bite you. We were all covered in little bites.

My main goal for our time on the island was to find an armadillo. I had never seen one in person, so I wanted to get the chance to. And, I never thought I would see as many as I did. They were everywhere, but they are very cautious, so as soon as they hear something, like people talking or walking, they get scared and run away. So getting a picture of one was very difficult, because they are fast too. So towards the end of the trip, I still hadn't gotten a picture of one. But as I came off of the last trail to the large field where the boat had dropped us off, I saw a little one walking along looking for food. I was able to follow it for 45 minutes, and we got so close to it that I could have put my hand on it's back if I wanted to. It was the coolest thing ever. And when we finally left to go find more trails, the armadillo started following us! It got so close again that it's nose was only three inches away from the toe of Dylan's sneaker!

Overall, it was a great day. The only bad part was that we got SO sunburned. I've definitely learned my lesson with that. My arms and legs hurt so bad that I couldn'tsleep at night because the soft cotton sheets were too much on my body.

Georgia Tomorrow!

I am so excited to go to Georgia tomorrow, but it doesn't feel real that it is here already. We haven't even started packing yet because it doesn't feel like it's here already. However, I'm very excited to spend a week away from here and just hang out with my family. We have a lot of things planned for this week, and since I'll have my laptop with me, I'll be updating while we're down there. Yay for vacations!
